The Sukhoi Su-17 Fitter is a Soviet, single-engine, attack-bomber aircraft with variable-sweep wings. The prototype first flew on August 2, 1966, and entered service in 1970. The Su-17 is a development of the Su-7, sharing the same fuselage, engine, landing gear, and tailplane, but with different wings. Initially designated Su-7IG, the aircraft was developed into several versions, which were widely exported to allied countries, including Poland, under the designations Su-20 and Su-22. The Sukhoi Su-22 is a Soviet, single-engine, variable-sweep wing attack-bomber aircraft, a development of the Su-17, intended primarily for export. The first export version was the Su-22K, with a Tumansky R-29 engine. A two-seat version was quickly developed, designated the Su-22M3U.
